SHINJU: A JAPANESE FANTASY OPERA

  • Manhattan School of Music - Greenfield Hall (map)

Sam sings the role of Hiroshi in a new opera preview of Kento Iwasaki's Shinju: A Japanese Fantasy Opera.

Shinju: A Japanese Fantasy Opera features origami-like, collapsible sets and Heian era inspired costumes in a musical drama reminiscent of Puccini operas and Ghibli films. The opera's reusable, collapsible staging allows the opera to be performed in unconventional spaces. Expanding the accessibility of opera to new audiences and venues by interpreting the opera form in a vibrant way accessible to today's youth, Shinju shares traditional Japanese cultural narratives around nature, drawing critical connections between our world today and the wisdom of traditional Japanese culture and sensibilities.
